Games 7 & 8, The Schizophrenia Continues

Game 7: Immanuel Church wins 9-5
Game 8: Immanuel Church wins 6-5

I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect tonight. Mech BIC has been the proverbial thorn in our side for the last 2 seasons. Each year, we seem to give them a run for their money in the first game, only to come up short. Then, typically, we completely shut down and get blown out in the second game.

Well, first inning, we have a ridiculously bad call go against us, and it leads to 2 runs. In the past, that probably would have been enough to pretty much doom us for the night. But this is a different year, and we came in and quickly scored a run. While not a monumental achievement, it helped to settle us down. The result? Some of the best defense we've played in years (no big inning given up tonight!), and we kept chipping away inning by inning. Highlight of the first game was our second Grand Slam of the season!

In the second game, we continued chipping away, little by little, until we found ourselves with a nice little lead. And when our bats cooled off late in the game, our defense stepped it up nicely. Nothing like a well-rounded game to - hopefully - start things rolling for the rest of the season.

So, for those of you following the season so far, we've played really bad, then really well, then really bad again, then really well again. Either we're the most schizophrenic team in the world, or we're doing our best imitation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Not sure either one is exactly a good place to be.

I do have one observation about Mech BIC. They are by far the fastest team we play, have been for years. So I have two questions for them. First, what the heck are they serving in their communion trays? Second, where can we get it?

Hi Matt. I stumble by here from Jeff's blog from time to time.

This might explain that first inning call. Suffices to say, we were owed one. Not that I favor make-up calls in general, and certainly not by a different umpire in a different game against a different team...

As for our team speed, I'm sure you've probably heard about what Urban Meyer did at Florida this spring, offering the student body a chance to win a spot on the football team by beating his fastest guys in the 40 yard dash. McBIC softball tryouts operate on a similar principle ;-)

I think McBIC players are faster because they are probably on average 10 years younger and 30 lbs per player lighter than the rest of the league.

Scott, I'll have to talk to you about your off-season approach, though I think Jeff might be closer to reality. :)

As far as the bad call goes, what frustrated me the most is that the ump had turned his back to the play before the throw made it to second, and had called your guy safe before either the ball or the runner got to the bag.

What happened in your game last week certainly sucks, though. It bugs the heck out of me that we pay these guys $60 a night, and they can't get the obvious calls right.

Yeah, Jeff does have the reality there, although we do have a couple guys who are just serious burners at any age. I'm not sure if our most recent addition of that variety has played against you guys yet. He definitely wasn't there on Thursday, definitely wasn't there for the playoffs last year, and I can't remember if he was there for last year's regular season matchup. I'm fairly certain he's the fastest guy on the team.

But yeah, certainly the reason we have so much top to bottom speed is our relative youth. You would never have played them, but the West Shore Green team is (or at least was last year) basically their youth pastor and a bunch of youth, and they'd probably be the one team in the league to rival us in terms of overall speed.
